Winning Weekend

Hello there – This Sunday has been full of lovely spring sunshine and is getting me excited for warmer weather!

This past week at Mercyhurst has been a fun one. There was an awesome Student Activities Council (SAC) event on Friday, Hurst Idol. Kind of like American Idol, students were able to audition to earn a spot in the line up. SAC welcomed six performers to the stage, all of which were fantastic. In the picture to the side, you see the judging table. From left to right the judges were: everyone's favorite art teacher, Ms. Patty, the Area Director for Freshmen Housing, Michael Grasso, A-list 'Hurst celebrity from our cafeteria, Rhonda and finally, Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG) President, and my personal friend, Richard Molloy. First place winner won free books for next term, second place won two tickets to see Of Mosters and Men in concert. There were also a few gift cards raffled off to audience members.

On Saturday, our No. 1 men's lacrosse team took on No. 9 Dowling and won 12-11. This was the team last year who took away our chances of playing beyond regular season games. Then on Sunday, our Lakers beat Alderson-Broaddus, 19-5. The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) victory is the 30^th straight regular season win for men's LAX. It was a great weekend for the Lakers! 

In the photo to the left you see the men's team and their coach ringing the Sister Damien Bell in the middle of Garvey Park. It's a tradition on our campus when you win a game, graduate or achieve any other major accomplishment, you ring the bell.


Also on Saturday, I spent the afternoon with my fellow MSG executive board and advisors. As a senior gift to us, our wonderful advisors took us on a wine tasting trail. When you come to school here, if you drive to North East you'll see tons and tons of grape vines. Along with the home of Welch's grape juice and jams, there are a lot of quaint wineries. I highly recommend, for those 21+, to explore "Lake Erie Wine Country." We visited 21 Brix, Johnson Estate Winery, Sparkling Ponds Winery, Quincy Cellars and Mazza Vineyards. They were all wonderful and I think I'm going to take my family for a tasting during graduation weekend. See some of the pictures below:

Spring Fest

It's almost here... One of the biggest student events you'll see at the 'Hurst. In just under 40 days, students will get to enjoy a FREE concert put on by the Mercyhurst Student Government and Student Activities Council.

This is my second year planning the event. However, even with one concert under my belt, I am still extremely nervous. This year I have contracted, with co-planner Adam Borgam (SAC Chair), The White Panda and Super Mash Bros.

It's going to be a full-out dance party for students complete with tons of fun food, photo booths, airbrush and glitter tattoos, trucker hats and more.

I can't wait to tell you how it goes, but for now there's a lot more planning to do.

Erin Go Bragh!

Happy St. Patrick's Day from Mercyhurst University!

As an Italian girl studying at an Irish Catholic institution with a rich Irish heritage, I feel like for the first time in my life, I have a purpose to fully celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

The Sisters of Mercy traveled from Dublin, Ireland and founded our school in September of 1926. Mercyhurst and its students show pride in their history and show it well during this green holiday.

Erie is the twin city to Dublin, Ireland so the Irish spirit was ever-present beyond our gates this weekend throughout the town. There was the annual St. Paddy's Day parade, music and tons of great food and green beer all along State Street, in downtown Erie.

Another wonderful aspect of this holiday, is that it makes me appreciate my international Irish friends who made the trek over the Atlantic, much like our Mercyhurst founders. At Mercyhurst, more than 40 different countries are represented by students studying here. During your time at Mercyhurst, you can't help but to get to know someone from a very different culture from your own.

There are many students who attend Mercyhurst from Ireland. And since last year MU opened their "Mercyhurst in Ireland" program, several students have the opportunity each term to study in Ireland. If I had to go through my undergraduate degree again, I would definitely take a term to study in
Ireland.

Wine Sampling

Hello everybody,

It's been a busy ending two weeks at the 'Hurst. We are closing in on the term and entering into finals tomorrow. I'm sorry I wasn't able to blog last week, a few of my end of term projects with my classmates took over and we wanted to make sure that all of our i's were dotted and t's were crossed.

Since I last posted, the Mercyhurst Student Government had its annual wine tasting. It was a blast, we had Kevin, from the Quincy Cellars in New York at the tasting. He brought 12 wines from both of his wineries for the Mercyhurst Students to sample. Along with the wine, we had different cheeses, crackers and fruit to go with our sampling. It was a great night and I think the students really learned a lot about the process of wine and how to responsibly drink in social settings. 

Also, this past week, MSG held a "Finances 101" seminar to help seniors, and other interested students in how to approach organizing their banking once they leave the 'Hurst. MSG paired with PNC Bank and taught students the basics of credit, how to build it, keep track and about the "dos and don'ts" of student loans.

This week we are going into finals, and not many more events are happening for this term. But as always, I'll keep you posted as interesting things re happening at the 'Hurst!

The Best Time of the Year – for Marketing Majors!

Hello there and happy Super Bowl Sunday!

I'm a Pittsburgh girl, born and raised, and will always be cheering on the Steelers, Penguins and the Pirates no matter who they're playing against. Which makes me a little bummed out that I won't be rooting on my boys in the big game this evening... However, the Penguins did win today so that makes up for it a bit, I guess. 

 Even though my Steelers won't be in the game today, I'll still be watching. The marketing major in me loves, and I mean L-O-V-E-S Super Bowl commercials. At any point in the school year, advertising and branding strategy, consumer behavior and marketing management classes all have students tuning in to the medias around them, and analyzing a variety of advertising materials. 

 However, during the Super Bowl is a special time to be a marketing and communication student because all my classes the following Monday and Tuesday, we get to dissect and grade all the commercials. The Super Bowl is a hot time for marketers to score a commercial spot. Not only does it go for big bucks, it's one of the most watched shows of the year... It's almost as popular as the Victoria Secret's Fashion Show. 

During the Super Bowl, there is a highly specific demographic that marketers are able to segment. Having that information is golden in advertising. We also get to see how marketers appeal to us, whether it be through "slice-of-life" scenarios, serious settings, or America's favorite – humor with a pinch of sex appeal.

I truly love my major, I love that the industry follows pop-culture, my major is something that is fresh and always changing. It makes time in the classroom a lot more fun and more hands on. I hope that if you find yourself at the 'Hurst someday, or anywhere else for that matter, that you'll find the area that you're just as passionate about too.

Mercyhurst History

So, as I said last week, we were going through a pretty chilly period. And with cold weather sometimes comes water main breaks.

Unfortunately, our campus as well as some neighborhoods around us suffered some water loss. Which for many of our residential buildings, loss of heat as well. So for the first time in a long stretch of Mercyhurst history, campus was closed down Thursday afternoon through Sunday evening.

I took this little surprise as an opportunity to take an extended weekend home. Since the majority of weekend events were postponed to a later date, I thought I would use this post to share some of my favorite Mercyhurst winter pictures that were streamed through Instagram. Endless Events!

A chilly hello from Mercyhurst U. today!

Currently we are under a Lake Effect Winter Weather Advisory and have about 30 inches of snow. So shortly after this, since two of my classes were cancelled for the day, I'll be throwing on some warm gear to play in the snow. Okay, maybe not really, but if you're into sledding, snowboarding and tubing, Erie is the place for you!

Last week MSG had David Coleman, the Dating Doctor in the Performing Arts Center. We had an awesome turn out and David gave a ton of great advice to students mixed with a good amount of comedy. We love having him on campus, and may bring some of his other presenters from his production company in for orientation week next year. So if you decide to become a MU Laker, I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to meet him and listen to him again.

This week is full of fun and exciting things!

This week MSG is hosting a forum on Wednesday to help inform students about all the little details about our change from trimesters to the new 4-1-4 semesters. Since I am a senior, this does not affect my scheduling, however I want the students to be as well informed as possible. So I am encouraging all to come out and ask as many questions as possible.

Also on Wednesday, MSG is holding a self defense workshop. This is something that SAC provided a few years ago, and we thought it was a good thing to bring back. It is always a good idea to be prepared for a variety of scenarios, I really liked the workshop the last time we offered it because it taught me how to help myself stay calm in such a high stress situation. And hopefully, I will never have to put these tips to use, it's nice to know I have some frame of reference to go back on.

On Thursday, I am taking the Ambassador Club snow tubing at a ski resort that is not too far from campus, Peek'n Peak. It's a social event that we are using as a fundraiser and as a way to get off campus and to have some fun.

On Friday, SAC is hosting it's third annual "Are You Smarter than a Professor" event. It's exactly what it sounds like, three Mercyhurst University professors will go head to head against MU students to compete in a battle of wits. Every topic can show up; from math to English, and even some pop-culture questions will appear.

And finally on Saturday, SAC and another club I am involved in PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) will be hosting a Frozen Putt-A-Thon. We are inviting the Mercyhurst and Erie community to the Harbor View Miniature Golf Course to be bold in the cold. Basically, people can come out for a few rounds of mini-golf in the snow to help a good cause. This year, we are fundraising for the Erie City Mission.

I can't wait to post pictures and tell you all about how these events went.

Christmas Craze

Hello readers!

The famous tree we light!

Christmas is in full swing at the 'Hurst! This past week we finished up MSG's 12 Days of Christmas, held the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and Miracle on 38th Street (or as we used to call it, Christmas on Campus).

The 12 Days of Christmas wrapped up at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony with a blessing of the seasons by Monsignor Rubino, Dean of the Business Department, and the lighting of one of the largest pine trees located in the center of campus. At the Ceremony, the twelfth gift, and iPad, was given to one lucky Laker – Jacob Griffen. It was great to see someone I know win! Not only is he a fellow Ambassador with me, he was one of the other students who studied abroad in Italy, Greece and Turkey with me.

Also at the Ceremony, we help the RSCO Christmas Decorating Contest. Fifteen trees competed for top prize, money to their organization's budget. And the Ambassadors won, woohoo! We won by a landslide with 150 votes. The Honors Council was second followed by the Outdoor Adventure Club.

On Friday, Miracle on 38th Street was held. Typically children who may not be as privileged as some come to campus for an afternoon of holiday fun including crafts, food, games, and a visit from Santa with some other surprises! Every year MSG lets the children go "shopping" for items in our make-shift store for their parents or guardians. It's a great way to get involved on campus, and it's always so gratifying to see how appreciative most of these children are.

The final Christmas-y thing that ended my week was a part of my work in the PR and Marketing Department, a virtual Ugly Sweater Contest! We're using Instagram and a holiday hash tag, #HurstHoliday to get Lakers to share their most hideous sweaters. We'll be picking a winner before students leave for break this Friday. Welcome Winter Term

Hungry Lakers at the Grand Opening!

Hello everyone! This past week was the first back, and the start of Mercyhurst's Winter Term.

This is my last Winter Term, as I'll be graduating in May. I cannot believe that in six short months I will be done with my undergraduate degree at Mercyhurst. This term started off crazy as ever with classes, MSG, residence life, and Ambassadors.

I'm enrolled in four classes this term: Marketing Management, Managerial Economics, Strategic Communication I, and Professional Development. It's a plate-full, but I'm excited to attack them. After these four, there are only three more classes I need for Spring Term. My degree never seemed more in reach!

Last term I completed my internship, and this term on top of my classes, I have accepted a part-time position within Mercyhurst's Marketing and PR Department. It's flattering and an awesome experience that I am blessed to have.

One of the 12 gifts

This past week was also full for MSG. As the event coordinator, I planned a Grand Opening event for our Student Union Great Room. We held it during tonight's Steelers vs. Ravens game and supplied pizza, wings, and more. More than 100 students showed up to cheer on their favorite teams and break in the new student space.

Today was also the start of MSG's 12 Days of Christmas. Each year leading up to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, MSG gives out little gifts each day to students. This year gifts include blankets, travel coffee mugs, school supplies, eco-friendly bags, and more. Our final gift is a big one this year, one lucky Laker will walk away with an iPad! I'll have to give you some more details and write a little more in my next post.

Twitter door decs

For residence life, a new term means fresh bulletin boards and door decorations for my residents. I created a Twitter theme this time around. I cut out blue birds and hand-stamped my residents names after an @ sign. I think they turned out pretty good! I was going to make one per resident, but I decided to do the whole room to make it look more like a Twitter feed. And I'm guilty of going the easy way out for my bulletin board for the short time before Christmas break, I did a Christmas-y "let it snow" theme. I promise I'll freshen it up for the new year!!

Finally, for Ambassadors, I have been working on our annual Christgiving dinner. It's happening next Sunday and I'll have to fill you in on it more when I post next week. It's a big dinner that the club hosts between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we all get together with four turkeys, 30lbs of potatoes, and tons of desserts to celebrate the holidays with good friends.

Fall Finals 2012

Hello everyone!

It's that dreaded time of the year again, finals... Not much has been happening this past week at the 'Hurst. A lot of studious Lakers have been filling the library. Though the best part of this week is that we have three days of finals, and then we are on break for the Thanksgiving holiday!

Most of my group papers are coming together, and I have been studying like crazy. I will be able to breathe so much easier once this term has ended.

I have a client in my Advertising Branding and Strategy class that we are presenting to, along with our final. We helped them create a name, logo, marketing campaign, and packaging design. I hope they'll love it! After the project is complete, and everything has been considered by the company, maybe I can show you what it is... but until then they've asked us to keep it on the down-low. That is something unique about the professors at Mercyhurst, they get random portfolio building projects like these for students to try and end up really exceeding.

Another monumental aspect of this past week is that I have completed my internship in the Marketing and PR Department. I finished my 200 hours, wrote my reflection paper, and had a wonderful experience. The department must have liked me too, because they offered me a part-time position to keep me around!

Beer Sampling

Hello everyone and happy November!

This week I'm going to tell you about the beer sampling I put together for MSG. Sometimes organizations on campus get caught up in catching the younger crowd entering college to make the transition from home to college smoother. While that is awesome, and very important, MSG wanted to do something special for those upperclassmen who are 21+.

So what better thing to incorporate than beer? Now before you go off thinking that it was a kegger thrown by MSG, I must stress it was a SAMPLING, a small tasting of beers!

We opened up 50 spots for students who are 21+ to come out to taste a few of Erie's own local microbrews. We paired this sampling with the end of Oktoberfest and Alcohol Awareness Week. The Brewerie at Union Station, Lavery Brewing Company, and Erie Brewing Company were all in attendance for the sampling. They brought a variety of their unique and different beers that are brewed right here in Erie, Pa.

The students loved it and it was a blast, I am also planning a wine tasting in February in line with Valentine's Day!

And here's a fun fact: Mercyhurst even has it's own brew! Senior Mercyhurst U. biology major Drew Spacht has brewed the first-ever Mercyhurst label – ‘Hurst Pale Ale, from hops grown at Mercyhurst's West campus farm. There are some videos on his process and a full article on Drew here. As a side note, it's even more interesting because as the marketing intern I saw his article get picked up by the AP News Wire, and Drew's story has been read all around the country, from New Jersey to San Fransisco!

Happy Halloween!

So, this past weekend was my big Halloween weekend!

Though Halloween isn't until this Wednesday, I had to get all of my holiday fun in now since I am on duty for Residence Life on the actual date.

My boyfriend, he's been mentioned in previous blogs, Matt was up for the weekend. We dressed up at Lucy and Ricky from I Love Lucy. Enjoy some of the pictures below...

We had a blast, we went to Haunted Erie on Saturday night which is an event that allows people to view all of the historical and supposedly haunted spots of Erie. I was a really nice night, and was super fun. After Haunted Erie, we had a quick dinner at Molly Branigan's a local Irish pub (I definitely recommend the pretzel sticks if you're ever around!) and then went out for a night on the town as Lucy and Ricky.

On Sunday, I put together the Ambassador Club's Halloween Social. It was in our Student Union Great Room and was packed with current Ambassadors and those who are pledging. About 150 people showed up dressed in costume. There was a mummy race, donut eating contest, pumpkin painting, and a photo booth. It was a great way to get to know some of the new faces pledging and to socialize with current Ambassador friends.

This made me super excited to plan our annual "Chrisgiving" dinner. It's the cross between Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner we have with the entire club between our holiday breaks. I'll post more about that in December.

Fall Break

Hello,

My beautiful city

This week was a short one at Mercyhurst. After classes came to an end on Wednesday, we went on Fall Break. Normal classes will start back up again on Tuesday. This was a much needed break, and I enjoyed mine at home in Pittsburgh, Pa.

While in Pittsburgh I enjoyed some shopping in the city and at the outlets. And it just isn't a trip to the 'Burgh unless you make a stop at one of the many best restaurants. If you've never experienced a Primanti sandwich at the original "dahntahn" (downtown) location on The Strip, you don't know what you're missing. Also, if you're ever in the area for breakfast, Pamela's Diner has some of the best morning meals. Even President Obama has special ordered her crepe pancakes to the White House. 

Another favorite of mine from good ol' Pittsburgh, Pa. is Soergel's Farm. I love honey crisp apples and they grow the best! There's lots to do at the farm besides buying apples and this time of year, it's always crowded with Pittsburghers getting ready for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Well, as I finish up this week's post, I have to admit, I'm watching the Steelers game. The score is 13-7 Pittsburgh, we're playing the Eagles.

I make my trip back to Erie tomorrow afternoon, but for the rest of my time at home I'm going to enjoy the Steelers and my family.

Whatta Week!

Can you believe it's already October? Tomorrow is the 1st, and this term is zooming by!

This past week was pretty uneventful in comparison to homecoming last week. This coming week is the mark of midterms for Mercyhurst, then this Thursday we go on Fall Break – which I'm super excited for.

So besides preparing for midterms let me give you a run down of what happened this week:

I had MSG meetings on Monday night. Monday at 8:30 p.m. are weekly MSG meetings, this is a great opportunity for any Mercyhurst student to voice concerns, issues, suggestions, or praises to student government. We swore in our new freshmen senators, so now we are working on a full senate for the year.

On Wednesday, I had a Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) meeting. This is a club that I am involved in that combines fun and practical professional experience in the field of PR and marketing. This year our big event is going to be the Frozen Putt-A-Thon. If you'd like to read up more, please read Joe's blog, he's the president of PRSSA and has blogged about the details, and I'm sure more are coming. I'll keep you posted too!

Also on Wednesday, I attended the Senior Gift Committee meeting. We've been hard at work narrowing down potential gift ideas for the senior class to vote on. Some of the ideas include: a green house/bio-dome, a breakfast bar in one of our dining venues, fire pit, a pavilion area by our athletic fields, or a concession stand in our athletic center. A senior gift is something that the outgoing senior class leaves as their mark at the 'Hurst.

Wednesdays are also my duty night as an RA, so I ended the night with the Res Life staff and rounds. 

On Friday I gave a big presentation in my Advertising Branding and Strategy class. It went well, it was a partner project and we had to analyze commercials, and apply theories and methods we have learned. It was actually pretty fun for a class project!

To end the week, there was the blessing of the new Mary Garden outside of Old Main. If you ever come for a visit, you can't miss it as you go up the drive. It was a wonderful way to bring the Mercyhurst community together on a Friday afternoon.

WOW.

Hello There!

I'm sorry it has been so long since I've posted to my blog. I've been busy with my time away from the 'Hurst. This summer I had so many adventures. For starters, I traveled with my Faculty Lead Study Abroad (FSAT – when you become a Laker, you'll get familiar with that term!) to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. It was an experience of a life time! Since this is a catch up blog, I think I'd do Europe more justice is I dedicate one of my next blogs to the trip versus cramming it in here. But enjoy a few of the pictures below.

Shortly after returning from my two week excursion to Europe, I celebrating a big birthday. I turned 21 in Las Vegas! It was wonderful, though not my first time there. The food was amazing, the shows, and the sites, it was a dazzling way to turn the big two-one. I went with my parents, my boyfriend Matt, and my roommate Andrea. If anyone is familiar with the show Pawn Stars, you'll enjoy this pic! They were filming the day I visited the shop and I saw the gang. So I just had to buy something as a souvenir... This is a two-dollar bill signed by all the stars – Ricky, Richard Sr., Big Hoss, and of course my favorite, Chumlee. So if you're a fan, be sure to watch for me somewhere on the third season if they happen to air the items I was there for. 



So if we fast forward through summer hang-out sessions and long hours of grocery store work, I found myself right back at the 'Hurst in Erie, PA. I had to come back a few weeks early due to Residence Life training. It's weird, I'm a senior living in sophomore area, because that is where I am an RA. I enjoy it though, I get to meet a lot of new people I would never probably have associated with.

Also during my weeks back, I was preparing for a bunch of Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG) events before classes started up. Like our Service Day BBQ, the Upperclassmen BBQ, dances, speakers, and Hurst Fest – our homecoming festivities. MSG and SAC (Student Activities Council) are hosting their annual Fall Ball this Friday at 7 p.m. It's always a great time and it is sort of like Mercyhurst's version of a homecoming dance. There is going to be some great food this year, I picked a menu with Buffalo chicken dip, spinach artichoke dip, chicken kabobs, dessert shooters, and chocolate covered strawberries. Hopefully, the weather is beauuutiful, and it doesn't rain.

The next major thing MSG has going on is our Distinguished Speakers Series. This Monday night we are hosting MTV's Andrew Jenks. He is a filmmaker with a show on MTV about not judging a book by its cover and living in different situations. We are super excited to have him on campus, and I'll definitely have to blog about the event next week!

My final piece of update is Hurst Fest. As I mentioned, it is Mercyhurst's Homecoming tradition. This year Hurst Fest is Sat., Sept. 22nd, our football team will be playing Slippery Rock University. There is always a lot of hype about homecoming, so I can't wait to fill you in on the details. Another exciting factor of Hurst Fest 2012, is that I am actually on the ballot for Homecoming Queen! How exciting? I am so flattered that my friends and peers would think to nominate me... Voting started today, so fingers crossed... Maybe I'll score enough votes to be Queen? I'd love to have a crown!

Oh well, that is all I have for now... SO sorry that I haven't been blogging, I promise that will change. Get ready for my senior year at MU!

Kids 'N Sibs

Whew! I feel like it was just yesterday when I last posted! This week sure flew by.

This weekend at the 'Hurst, SAC held its annual Kids 'N Sibs weekend. Kids 'N Sibs is a weekend long event where SAC holds a variety of activities on both Friday and Saturday for Mercyhurst Students to do with their siblings. Most "kids" bring "sibs" or cousins, or just friends from other schools. Older, younger, or the same age, it doesn't matter! Though you do not need a sibling to attend, in fact I, personally, am an only child and have attended this event in the past with no one to claim as my "sib."
 
It was an "Under the Sea" theme this year, on Friday night we had a treasure scavenger hunt that lead groups around campus to find clues to where the hidden treasure was. We also had under the sea creatures at a build-a-bear station and the movie "Dolphin Tale" for all to enjoy. Also, notice the Kids 'N Sibs t-shirts in the pictures below, I designed them and they were a huge hit!

My favorite though, of the whole weekend, was Saturday! Saturday was set up with more under sea fun complete with an inflatable obstacle course, a shark slide (see below), more sea creature build-a-bears, face painting, balloon animals, Chick-fil-A, cotton candy, popcorn, and to top it off... Rita's Italian Ice – Swedish FISH flavored of course! Throughout the day on Saturday, there was also chances to win 2 iPads! This was a great event and more and more students come out every year. Maybe once you're a Laker too you'll be bringing up some brothers or sisters to our Kids 'N Sibs weekend, it's always a fun time filled with tons of free stuff!

Next weekend we have the final Laker Spirit Club (LSC) event of the year, it's on Friday and it's a baseball game. Then on Friday night we have a Caribbean Night that we are sponsoring with the Multicultural Center and a Jamnesty concert on Saturday night. After next weekend we have one of the biggest events of the year – Spring Fest! I know I've been mentioning it a little here and there, but I'll be sure to give you the total run down on it next week, all I can say about it for now is that it's on Cinco de Mayo and I'll be meeting Sean Kingston!
